The White House must have felt that President Obama needed more glowing coverage as the year wound down. Mainstream media dutifully complied, with puff pieces that should make reporters gag.
It was a year that saw Obama’s ISIS strategy in tatters, the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11, increased racial tension and violent protests.
The economy, which Obama claimed had “turned a corner,” continued to disappoint. Foreign policy “victories” included a terrible nuclear arms deal with Iran, a toothless “climate change” agreement with many other countries and renewed relations with a communist Cuba that kept cracking down on dissidents anyway.
Our IBD/TIPP polls showed that the public has little faith in Obama either domestically or internationally. Just 46% now approve of the job he’s doing overall, and a mere 28% approve his handling of ISIS.
So what’s the press writing about as the year comes to a close? How he’s “broken the second-term curse”! His incredible faith! How he “roughed it” in Alaska with Bear Grylls and was in a Web video with Jerry Seinfeld!
The New York Times ran through a “series of accomplishments” and how Obama’s “success in the past 12 months, both overseas and at home, defied expectations.” The story couldn’t have been more glowing if it were written by the White House press office.
Meantime, the Washington Post featured a 3,000-word love letter titled “The Quiet Impact of Obama’s Christian Faith,” complete with a photo of Obama in a reverent prayer pose. The front-page story told how Obama’s faith has “been central to his identity as a new kind of Democrat” and “could bring civility to the country’s political debate.”
But the most enthusiastic coverage was reserved for Obama’s holing of a 40-foot golf chip shot and a reaction that, as one story put it, can be added to “the list of reasons why he’s the coolest president in history.”
